Post and Beam Garage FAQs

No matter how familiar you may be with construction, you may have many important questions. Your new garage will be an important part of your property. A post-and-beam garage will add beauty and character.

Think of yourself as the foreman of the project. The Carriage Shed will be part of your team, and we will explore ideas and options together.

Here are some common questions, but feel free to ask any questions.

We are here to help you make the best decisions about your garage project.

What are post and beam Characteristics?
  • Post and Beam frames can be both structural and ornamental. The metal connectors can be completely hidden within the frame or exposed and decorative.
  • These structures allow you a great deal of freedom in developing both interior and exterior space.
  • A Post and Beam frame will look similar to a timber frame construction since the size of the members is alike. Labor cost is less since it does not utilize complex joinery.
  • In constructing this type of garage, the frame, wall, and roof components are assembled in succession.
  • Post and beam frames are usually used with additional structural elements such as shear panels and infill framing to create a secure building.
  • This style frame demands tight, well-crafted joints, but post and beam fabrication is usually less labor-intensive than timber frame construction.
What is the difference between post & beam and timber framing?

Traditionally, wooden posts & beams are secured with metal plates & screws.

Timber framing also uses large wooden posts & beams; how they are connected is the critical difference.

A true timber frame barn uses special, carved-out wood-to-wood connections called joinery to connect timbers together. In timber-frame constructions, when connections are authentic and traditional in nature, oak pegs are used to secure the connections.

I already have a plan; will you give me a quote to make it post and beam?

Yes.

Ideally, we like to have 1/4″-scale floor plans and elevations – with those plans, we can provide a very accurate estimate.

Alternatively, we can price just about any plan. Estimates will become much more defined as the plan/design becomes more detailed.

Who is in charge of checking zoning regulations, getting permits, and putting in a foundation?

Though The Carriage Shed does supply a foundation plan and structural prints, the customer is responsible for all site work and foundation needs before the building can be delivered. They are also responsible for any post set up landscaping or finished grading. We suggest contacting your local town office for information regarding permits and zoning regulations.
