Why add a cupola to the roof of your building?
A cupola’s open vents (louvers) allow the air to flow in the upper part of a building.
Certain cupolas will allow natural light to brighten the dark reaches of a roof’s vaulted ceiling.
Today, cupolas placed on barns, homes, and garages can be functional, decorative, or both.
What building styles are a good match for a cupola?
Since their first appearance in the 8th century, cupolas have enjoyed popularity in the
architecture of almost every culture. They are a staple feature in Greek Revival and
Second Empire (a sub-style of Victorian) houses.
However, there are so many cupola styles that a cupola can be easily matched and incorporated into any building design.
Are cupolas necessary?
Cupolas are not necessary, but the Aesthetic they add to Your Barn Is Unmatched.
They are also useful as they add to the ventilation of your building.
How do I determine the size of the roof-top cupola?
The most important aspect of selecting a cupola is determining its size. A good reference
for selecting the right size cupola for your building is a minimum of 1.25” for every foot
of unbroken roof ridge line.
For example, if a roof section measures 24’, the minimum size of the cupola should be 30”.
For roof ridge line lengths of 48’ and longer you may want to consider using two or three
cupolas.
The Carriage Shed cupolas can enhance the appearance of your structure, or you can have a
working cupola that adds extra venting.
Can I add more than one cupola?
Just one cupola may not add enough character to your barn. Depending on the size of
your building two or even three cupolas may create the perfect look.
A Small Sample of Our Cupolas
The Carriage Shed offers many different styles. If you desire a cupola, talk with us; we can help you decide. Some advantages of a cupola are listed below.
Ventilation: Cupolas are often designed with windows or louvers that allow for air circulation, improving ventilation within a building. This can be particularly useful in attics or barns where airflow is important for maintaining optimal conditions.
Natural Light: The windows in a cupola allow natural light to enter the interior space, reducing the need for artificial lighting during the day. This can help lower energy costs and create a more pleasant indoor environment.
Architectural Interest: Cupolas add visual interest to a building’s exterior, serving as a focal point or architectural accent. As you can see in the photo gallery to the left, cupolas come in various styles and designs, from simple and traditional to ornate and decorative, allowing for customization to match the overall aesthetic of the structure.
Historical Charm: Cupolas have a long history in architecture, dating back centuries. Adding a cupola to a building can evoke a sense of history and tradition, enhancing its overall character and charm.
Weather Protection: Besides providing ventilation, cupolas can help regulate temperature and moisture levels within a building, which can be particularly beneficial in regions with big variations in weather conditions.
