Board & Batten Siding

Tradtional warmth, rustic character, and eye-catching texture!

You’re probably already familiar with board and batten siding, even if you are not sure what to call it. You may have seen it in magazines and online on Pinterest boards and Instagram feeds. You may have even seen board and batten siding on home exteriors in your own neighborhood.

Board and Batten siding is hot right now. However, did you know the style dates back nearly 200 years. Perhaps this historical and traditional siding aspect is what may be part of its appeal to homeowners.

Barns and houses with board and batten siding were inspired by Nordic European buildings and gained popularity in America sometime around the middle of the 19th century. Traditionally, board and batten siding starts with wide vertical planks (boards), which are then joined together by thin vertical strips (battens) to cover the seams. Homesteaders and farmers would use sawmills to cut the long boards, and the battens were put in place to make the structure as airtight as possible. Farmers embraced the style when building barns because the technique was inexpensive, assembly was relatively simple, and the result was energy efficient.

Board and batten siding adds a touch of traditional warmth and rustic character to any home. Its unusual vertical lines produce an eye-catching texture that goes well with farmhouses and modern kinds of architecture.

Clapboard Siding

Attractive, can be painted and is a fine weather proof siding.

Clapboard is a type of wood siding that comes in long, narrow planks installed horizontally, often overlapping, on the exterior walls. Clapboard wood siding can be made from several types of wood.

For homeowners living in areas with lots of rain or snow, clapboard makes a great choice to protect the home from water damage.

Clapboard siding is sometimes called bevel siding, lap siding, and weatherboard, with regional variation in the definition of those terms, is wooden siding of a building in the form of horizontal boards, which overlap.

Shake Siding

Traditional and now offered in many spectacular colors!

Shake siding is split from traditionally a cedar wood block. Shake overall has a rough and rustic appearance.

This type of siding is made of small rectangular panels that are placed next to each other to cover the entire siding of the home. These small panels are installed in even, horizontal lines to create uniform spacing from top to bottom.

A shake home exterior traces their history throughout American home styles. However, there have been innovations such as colors. Boring shake siding colors that are limited and bland are a thing of the past. Instead of the traditional wood-brown color that was overused in older homes, shake siding colors are now fresh, exciting, and available in a wide variety of colors.

Modern homes integrate this traditional siding style with confidence, and the results are nothing short of spectacular.
